Given that HIV is an epidemic in the South still, particularly and specifically for Black men who are having sex with men. And of those that I'd heard about, none of them were treating the character's status in a way that wasn't reductive or that wasn't looking to teach the reader or something deeply detrimental, and that was really strange to me. I, myself, hadn't read a narrative featuring a Black cis guy that was poz at all. And I knew that I wasn't interested in writing his character, or any of the characters, in a way that capitalized on his trauma or the trauma or struggles that they may have undergone or found themselves negotiating. I knew that I was interested in not writing the character in a reductive way. ![]() Did the lack of poz representation in literature make you feel pressure to portray Ben in any particular way because of his status? ![]() It’s so refreshing to see a fully rendered, nuanced poz character. ![]()
